Politics and the Kingdom

 Aaron Salvato

When you finally see Jesus as King, the spell breaks. The fog lifts.

You stop staking your hope on the politicians of the moment, since you’ve already sworn allegiance to someone who doesn’t campaign, doesn’t posture, and doesn’t need your vote.

Someone who has already won.

With loyalty anchored in Christ, the whole landscape shifts.

You stop clutching your preferred politicians like fragile idols.

You’re not responsible for them.

You don’t need to defend them.

You don’t need to play apologist for them.

You can finally be honest about their hypocrisy when it arises.

The fear that losing a political battle means losing everything is revealed to be utterly empty anxiety, because your future never sat in their hands to begin with.

And for the ones on the “other side”, the ones who seem ready to torch the world with every press release, you no longer live in a state of low-grade panic.

You don’t need to spend your life nervously plot their downfall.

You don’t need to spiral every time they make a choice that twists your stomach.

The late-night doom scroll loses its power, since the fate of creation has never hinged on their competence.

You have a King.

Your attention and allegiance are caught up in Christ.

He stands above the parties that keep failing us.

He refuses the tired categories of left and right the way a warrior would refuse to fight with a rusty butterknife, choosing instead the strange yet mighty authority of the Kingdom-above, where people are shaped into His likeness rather than the likeness of pundits or power brokers.

Every knee will bow to Him in the end, and no one will be able to hide behind the shield of their party’s platform.

He’s the only ruler who sees precisely where each of us are misguided in our politics, yet loves us ALL without flinching.

He’s the only one who died for ALL of us, even while we argue about policies that scratch the surface of much deeper wounds.

He’s the one who will fix all of this.

Who will rescue, restore, and set all things right.

Who will put an end to all wars, violence, injustice, and corruption.

So, you can let the earthly dukes and their bad decisions drift out of your nightmares. Let them be small and petty.

You have a King.

The King is coming.

The King has already arrived.

Do not fear the evil of the age.

He has already overcome the world.

Preach the Gospel.

Do Justice.

Love mercy.

Love your enemy.

When human history finally exhales, the flag of EVERY earthly party will be burned to ash under the banner of the Lion and the Lamb…

The Lion who storms the gates of hell with scars on His skin and our names on His heart.

The Lamb who was slain for His enemies.

The King who carried the world’s future up a cursed hill on his bloody, torn back.

Follow Him.

He’s the only ruler worth following.
