NEVER LOSE YOUR WONDER
I was reading research by Mark Batterson yesterday. No one summarizes and simplifies the wonder of the Creator and Creation like him. Consider these ten facts:
1. No one has the same fingerprint, voiceprint, eyeprint or even sweatprint. There will never be anyone like you.
2. You are on a giant merry-go-round called Earth that is spinning on its axis at 1000 mph and speeding through space at 67,000 mph. You traveled 1.6 million miles through space today and the Milky Way is spinning at 468,000 mph. I will bet you do not even feel dizzy.
3. 330 billion cells in your body will recycle today.
4. There are thirty-seven sextillion biochemical reactions happening in your body every single second.
5. If your double-helix DNA were stretched end to end, it would reach the moon and back nearly 150,000 times.
6. With every heartbeat, six quarts of blood FedEx that oxygen through sixty thousand miles of veins, arteries, and capillaries. The average heart will pull this off more than two billion times without skipping a beat.
7. The sun is 333,000 times the mass of the Earth but compared to most stars it is a yellow dwarf. Astronomers now estimate the existence of more than two trillion galaxies. Those galaxies have an average of one hundred billion stars. That is a lot of stars to wish upon!
8. Every second the sun turns four million tons of matter into the equivalent of a trillion megaton bombs every second of every minute and every hour of every day.
9. If the Earth were a little further from or a little closer to the sun, we would freeze or fry.
10. If you could catch a flight to the sun—five hundred mph, twenty-four hours per day, 365 days per year—it would take more than two decades to get there.
Let these truths sink in. Enter that sense of amazement and wonder. Be careful not to marvel at the mechanical and not the Magnificent One. Do not put God into a little box or downsize Him. Oh, for a high view of God!! God is BIG and PERSONAL.
I remember being on a beach once. Bored. That morning, I had read these words from Psalm 139:17-18, “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You.”
On the beach, I decided to conduct an experiment. I took one handful of sand and counted the grains. After 30 minutes, I quit. It was impossible. There were too many. All I could do was bask in the truth that God has more thoughts toward me than the sand grains on the seashore. I have never forgotten that revelation and how it made me feel.
God is BIG and PERSONAL. Don’t believe me? Count the grains of sand in one handful and read a science book.
