UNL curriculum

One other huge factor as you look for enrichment or advanced courses for Lewis.

1) math and science courses are designed to be in sequence and aligned with what UNL and other major universities demand for high school. UNL will only accept algebra 1 as a high school course if taken by an eighth grader. There have been great arguments with UNL admissions over this topic but math and science course requirements may be even more strict with the UNL college of engineering.  UNL will not accept geometry listed on a high school transcript for admission to UNL

2) most high schools allow (Norris included) students to take college credits during 11th grade and 12th grade.  UNL and many other colleges allow students to enroll into their college courses as 10th graders with the high school’s approval.

3) college courses during high school often require the student to have taken the ACT.  Copies of the ACT report must be submitted to the respected college before the student can enroll.

4) it’s frustrating for 8th and 9th graders who want to take independent courses because of limited options.   but the Nebraska High School curriculum is a respected program, especially for American families traveling abroad. For 8th and 9th graders it may be best to stay away from math and science, but rather take career related exploration courses.

5) to take college credit math courses during high school, the students must have completed algebra 1 and 2, and geometry. Depending on ACT scores, students can begin with College Algebra or Calculus. Pre Calc is recommended for Calc. Another course is statistics.

But….be careful with calculus. There are business Calc courses which will not be accepted by the college of engineering. It’s best to match the course number of the class to what the college of engineering will accept.
