Odysseus knew that the temptation could seduce him to ruin. He took strong precaution to avoid ruin but he wanted to hear what it was like to be seduced. We can be exactly like him if we don’t avoid the temptation one hundred percent. God created us tk have the freedom to choose, knowing that this could lead to problems. He didn’t create us to be robots or beings with no ability to respond to a temptation. Our culture screams instant gratification, selfish ambition and a desire for power or prestige over others. The Hebrews seemed to forget where they were going after leaving Egypt, thinking they had it better off as slaves. Our natural desire to compare ourselves to others, thinking we are missing out on the pleasures of other, can be just like Odysseus’s desire to travel near the danger. Let’s guard our hearts to not go there, but practice His presence each day.
