Psalm 30 (139)

Psalm 139 is a profound statement to our identity with our Triune God. We can be in a crowd and feel lonely. We can have 500 ‘friends’ on social media yet feel isolated. We can hide our true ideas of who we are from others and from our Lord. How do we acquire a safe and secure identity with our Creator?  Psalm 139 seems to be saying that we can ask for it. Desiring to be open, vulnerable, and honest before God goes against our inclination to be self sufficient and independent.

“Despite the rise of the mental health profession, people are becoming increasingly vulnerable to depression. Why? Martin Seligman, a brilliant psychologist with no religious ax to grind, has a theory that it’s because we have replaced church, faith, and community with a tiny little unit that cannot bear the weight of meaning. That’s the self. We’re all about the self. We revolve our lives around ourselves.” - John Ortberg, Soul Keeping: Caring For the Most Important Part of You
