How are you being transformed from darkness to light? What shadows of darkness do you want to walk out of? The apostle John, as an eye witness and apprentice of Jesus, is claiming that God is light. How does that term impact you? When it’s dark outside, the risk of falling or running into something is greater. Light exposes what is in the dark. The same is true in our hearts. Our inner life can be very dark if we dwell on dark topics. But God as Light exposes our dark thoughts. No one knows what dark mindsets we can cultivate but Him. He is the cure to what needs to be solved in us. Our identity could be stuck in those dark mindsets but He is transforming us into a new person.
“Salt does no good if it stays in the salt shaker. Salt hinders bacterial decay. Meat will rot without a salt preservative. Light dispels darkness. This was not a call to create a perfect society – John knew that was an impossible brief – but it was a call to be incarnated in society, to be ‘in it but not of it’, to improve it. That teaching is character changing, steadying for me for a life of meaning and purpose.” - John Stott
“Light produces life and growth and beauty, but sin is darkness; and darkness and light cannot exist in the same place. If we are walking in the light, the darkness has to go. If we are holding to sin, then the light goes. There is no middle ground, no vague “gray” area, where sin is concerned.” - Excerpt, Be Real (1 John) by Warren W. Wiersbe
