Even the evil spirits know that Jesus has authority over the unseen world. Scripture teaches about the unseen reality that our modern tech driven world denies. What can we learn from this man’s story? I’m guilty of denying or minimizing the demonic. I do not want to dwell on the possibility of evil around Mr, but rather focus on the authority of Jesus. May you and I grow in our awe of Him, quickly recognizing what is not of Him.
“The name “Legion” is significant. A legion was a unit in the Roman army made up of three to five thousand soldiers. Identifying himself as Legion reflected how the man viewed himself. He knew himself to be a broken, fragmented person. There was no wholeness in him. It was as though a multitude of competing voices kept him off balance and in constant turmoil. Like the Roman legions, these competing voices were hostile, invasive, and impossible to control. No wonder he was full of self-hatred and bent on self-destruction. He thought of himself as a hopelessly broken person. The world would be better off without him.” - Excerpt. Following Jesus: Discipleship in the Gospel of Mark by Steve Langford
“The Kingdom is where everything is turned upside down. Those who are marginal, those considered not respectable, are suddenly proclaimed as the people who are called to the Kingdom. The part of us that is weak, broken, or poor suddenly becomes the place where something new can begin. Jesus says, “Be in touch with your brokenness. Be in touch with your sinfulness. Turn to God because the Kingdom is close at hand. If you are ready to listen from your brokenness then something new can come forth in you.” - Henri Nouwen
