Grit and Joy

Me - grit is a choice to be obedient  a restless surrender to the awe of our Father  it is an assertive passion to study Scripture by making application to what we discover  grit is a consistent and dedicated habit of praying about everything, knowing that our Father knows all details  there is no surprise to Him  teaching g, modeling our love for our Father with the passion to  e a disciple maker brings great fulfillment and a sense of purpose

I recently came across the Finnish concept “sisu,” and it got me thinking about the connection between grit and happiness.

If you’ve not heard this word before, it literally means intestines or stomach. But the cultural concept of sisu is about far more than your belly. While there’s no direct English translation, I think of it as a combination of grit, perseverance, and an ability to overcome adversity.

So what does sisu have to do with coaching?

Researchers have been paying a lot of attention to this idea of “grit” over the past decade, particularly as it relates to goal attainment. You may have heard psychologists like Angela Duckworth and Caroline Miller talking about the correlation between grittiness and overall life satisfaction.

Studies have shown that grit is a stronger predictor of success than intelligence or talent. And unlike an IQ score, grit is a capacity that we can all intentionally build and grow.

THIS is what I love about the coaching profession. Each day, I get to help people build the skills that make their lives richer and more fulfilling. (Bonus: I also get to apply the tools that I acquired in coach training to my own life!)

So how does it work?

One way to cultivate sisu is by making a direct connection between your interests and your goals. Research shows that tapping into core values in order to establish grit results in increased performance and persistence over time.

Passion supports perseverance, and perseverance leads to greater happiness and well being in life. Conditions that build resilience on the road to achieving our goals include:

  • Overcoming obstacles

  • Trying and failing, then trying again

  • Learning from our mistakes
