Inside Out 37

When our boys were growing up we tried to make our home a safe place. I remember reading books by Francis and Edith Schaffer who talked about engaging the non believing world but closing the door of your home to shut out then influences of the world. The door to our house was gateway to safety or chaos. As a counselor at school, I could tell who has an open door to most any influence and those who shit the door. I remember telling our boys ‘what we are talking about is at home talk - not to be repeated in public.’  Topics ranged from what other families were doing, school topics, politics or whatever. Perhaps many of the topics were biased but important times to influence values. We didn’t expect anyone outside our home to live up to our values but we were all in this together as our family. Living with integrity is practiced everyday under God’s loving presence.

“The soul seeks God with its whole being. Because it is desperate to be whole, the soul is God-smitten and God-crazy and God-obsessed. My mind may be obsessed with idols; my will may be enslaved to habits; my body may be consumed with appetites. But my soul will never find rest until it rests in God.” - John Ortberg, Soul Keeping: Caring For the Most Important Part of You
