Thanks 10

Reconciling with those who have caused hurt is very difficult. I tend to keep my distance and not initiate any move toward resolving the issues. But keeping my distance doesn’t help solve anything. My fear is setting myself up for another round of hurt. Is it ever safe to initiate a risky step toward forgiveness?  I’m praying that God will open doors, enabling me to want reconciliation. I am praying that I’ll be able to let go of my need to protect myself, praying that He is with me and will be with me. I’m praying for a calm heart and mind, that I’ll have the right words to say.

“Throwing down your staff is letting go and letting God. And that's counterintuitive for those of us who are control freaks. You can have faith or you can have control, but you cannot have both.  If you want God to do something off the chart, you have to take your hands off the controls.” - Mark Batterson, All In: You Are One Decision Away From a Totally Different Life

Bible 329

Learning to developed an intimate relationship with our Triune God was something I wanted but I thought it was impossible. Even though He was Creator of the universe, I thought He had far bigger issues than me to attend to. But the Bible is full of stories demonstrating His willingness to be with individuals. He promises to NEVER leave us or forsake us. The apostle John was a changed man by knowing Jesus, encouraging us to do the same. Daniel’s courage and wisdom were results of a strong life of prayer.  Today’s readings inspire me to have a deeper resolve to seek Him.

What is your calling?  This question used to bother me a lot. I questioned if I was really following God’s will. How could I know if I was really on the right path?  My guilt and over thinking would often twist me in circles. But a more careful reading of today’s passage calmed me down and slowed my over thinking. Following Christ is simple but difficult in our ordinary days with where He has placed us. His call to be the parent or grandparent He wants me to be is simple but difficult, requiring wisdom to respond in Grace and Love. Following Christ is being intentional in my relationships.  Following Christ is not reaching celebrity status or winning anything. It is falling more in love with Jesus, living out His command to love others, being transformed in the process.

“Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death. Set God-sized goals. Pursue God-ordained passions. Go after a dream that is destined to fail without divine intervention. Keep asking questions. Keep making mistakes. Keep seeking God. Stop pointing out problems and become part of the solution. Stop repeating the past and start creating the future. Stop playing it safe and start taking risks. Expand your horizons. Accumulate experiences. Enjoy the journey. Find every excuse you can to celebrate everything you can. Live like today is the first day and last day of your life. Don’t let what’s wrong with you keep you from worshiping what’s right with God. Burn sinful bridges. Blaze new trails. Don’t let fear dictate your decisions. Take a flying leap of faith. Quit holding out. Quit holding back. Go all in with God. Go all out for God.” - Mark Batterson, All In: You Are One Decision Away From a Totally Different Life

Bible 328

Waiting for anything we want is difficult. I get very impatient when I do not sense that the an outcome to my efforts may not be what I want. I’m learning that Hod is very patient and He wants me to acquire that character quality. God is always in time and He wants the very best for us. He is bit playing with our minds because He is holy and loving. He wants us to mature through our decisions and experiences. Being a true Gentleman, He is does not force His will upon us. In the process of waiting, I’m learning humility. It seems that there is a correlation between impatience and pride.

Waiting for the Day of the Lord, for justice and His return, may seem in the distance. But our lives are very short compared to eternity. Our time may be running out to respond to Hks waiting on us.

It’s easy to say that the past four years have been a process of reorienting my priorities. But in reflection, the truth is that all of life is an adjustment what is most important. Responsibilities change and family members grow into their own priorities. But more than that, the more we discover how much our Father loves us, He compels us to focus on Him and His priorities, not our own. Our character and motivation are in transition as we respond to the Spirit’s lead. As we seek our Father, transformation takes place.

“You can base your identity on a thousand things — the degrees you’ve earned, the positions you hold, the salary you make, the trophies you’ve won, the hobbies you have, the way you look, the way you dress, or even the car you drive. But if you base your identity on any of those temporal things, your identity is a house of cards. There is only one solid foundation: Jesus Christ. If you find security in what you have done, you will always fall short of the righteous standard set by the sinless Son of God. The solution? The gospel. There is only one place in which to find your true identity and eternal security: what Christ has done for you.” - Mark Batterson, All In: You Are One Decision Away From a Totally Different Life

Bible 327

Reading about real life examples who inspire us to be better is inspirational. Knowing individuals who inspire others is even better. Peter warned about false teachers who sound good and may even look good. Knowing people who are authentic in their faith helps filter out the false narratives of those who could lead us astray. Daniel and his friends were loyal to their faith in God. Big knowing if God would protect them or not, they remained true to what they believed. Refusing to compromise by saying to themselves, ‘this is no big deal’ took courage. May you and I develop a loyalty to our Lord that cannot be shaken.

Who have been some of your personal heroes who have helped you mature?  Thinking back, I’ve been fortunate to watch several men live by high standards. Two examples were role models in parenting. I was a college student and was invited into their homes. The quality of interaction was something far different than I had seen. These two men also modeled a deep theology of talking all things out with our Father in prayer. One man in particular, had taken great risk by teaching in another country that was hostile to a Christian witness. There have been others, but I’m grateful for these two who sparked something in me. Each took the time to interact with me, deepening my faith.

“...people can go to church every week of their lives and never go all in with Jesus Christ. I'm afraid we've cheapened the gospel by allowing people to buy in without selling out. We've made it too convenient, too comfortable. We've given people just enough Jesus to be bored but not enough to feel the surge of holy adrenaline that courses through your veins when you decide to follow Him no matter what, no matter where, no matter when.” - Mark Batterson, All In: You Are One Decision Away From a Totally Different Life

Bible 327

I used to have a lot of doubt regarding the truth and accuracy if our faith in Christ. But Peter’s teaching is reassuring and the Bible has stood the test of criticism. There is no credible source to verify anything different than the death and resurrection of Jesus. If Jesus rose from the dead, everything changes. We have a certainty of hope that gives meaning and purpose for each day.

Daniel and his friends lived long before Jesus but their faith did not waiver in a culture that committed horrible atrocities to others. May you and o continue to develop the character qualities Peter listed.

Bible 326

Our culture certainly needs grace and compassion. Where would our world be without grace. God provides what we do not deserve or earn. His grace, shown on the cross, is demonstrated all the time by those who have love and compassion on others. I’m guilty of being short tempered and impatient but I’m learning to be more calm and patient with those who are difficult.

Daniel’s faith and his dependence on God’s grace in the heat of the moment must have depended on his daily prayer life. His intense relationship with God empowered him to navigate the toughest of situations.

It’s as if the apostle Paul is speaking to me, looking me in the eyes - “Stop the complaining!”  I may not voice all my grumbling but I have kicked the can around plenty of times. Much of my inner turmoil relates to my lack of control on the outcomes of decisions. I’d like others to respond and think the way I do, resulting in anxiety. But fortunately I do not control others nor history. I’d probably mess everything up more than it already has been. May you and I let go of our desire to control what happens, that we may faithfully participate with our Triune God.

“You can have faith or you can have control, but you cannot have both.” If you want God to do something off the chart, you have to take your hands off the controls.” - Mark Batterson, All In: You Are One Decision Away From a Totally Different Life

Bible 320

The apostles emphasized unity among churches over and over. Many groups major in the minor preferences and fail to encourage each other for what new all have in common. I’m humbled to think how much my Heavenly Father loves us. There have been a few time I’ve been criticized for my faith, but nothing compared to the persecution of our brothers and sisters in hard places to live. I have tried to distance myself from those that have been critical, rather than react. Not sure if that is the best but I’ve felt compelled to live out my faith like God has wanted, rather than fit into someone’s box. As long as I’m following His command to live Him with my whole self and love others, He will teach me more in the process.

In the past when I’ve seen the word ‘service’, I’ve experienced guilt because I thought I wasn’t doing enough. I could nut measure up to the ‘good’ examples who volunteered for several things. I’m slowly learning that Jesus taught a strong word about being seen by others, only promoting a stellar resume. Jesus taught to do good things in secret, that the Father might recognize our true motivation. I’m learning to not condemn myself for not measuring up to expectations, but rather to lean in on the Spirit to sense His judge for the next risk to take for Him.

“The survey consisted of one question: If you had your life to live all over again, what would you do differently? Three replies emerged as a consensus. One, risk more. Two, reflect more. Three, do more things that live on after you die.” - Mark Batterson, Win the Day

Bible 329

Today’s devotional is full of practical wisdom. The sooner I realize that I am not a know it all, that I need to learn from others, I’m on the right path. It is easy to get off track by comparing myself to others, rather than learning from their example. I think God is calling each of us to find people who are following Christ and want to follow Him  their example of humility and dependence upon our Savior help us find wisdom for everyday living

Nicky’s comments stood out to me:  “ More depends on your walk than on your talk, what you practice than what you preach, what you do than what you say. What people see is far more important than what they hear. People do what people see.”

Ellie Wiesel

Elie Wiesel was born into a Jewish family in Romania. He was only a teenager when he and his family were rounded up by the Nazis and taken to Auschwitz, and then to Buchenwald. In his book, *Night*, he gives a terrifying and intimate account of the increasing horrors he endured – the death of his parents and eight-year-old sister, and the loss of his innocence by barbaric hands. In the foreword to the book, François Mauriac writes of his encounter with Elie Wiesel: ‘On that most horrible day, even among all those other bad days, when the child witnessed the hanging (yes!) of another child who, he tells us, had the face of a sad angel, he heard someone behind him groan: “For God’s sake, *where is God*?” And from within me, I heard a voice answer: “*Where He is*? This is where – hanging here from this gallows.”’ François Mauriac goes on, ‘And I, who believe that God is love, what answer was there to give my young interlocutor... What did I say to him? Did I speak to him of that other Jew, this crucified brother who perhaps resembled him and whose cross conquered the world? ‘Did I explain to him that what had been a *stumbling block* for his faith had become a *cornerstone* for mine? And that the connection between the cross and human suffering remains, in my view, the key to the unfathomable mystery in which the faith of his childhood was lost... That is what I should have said to the Jewish child. But all I could do was embrace him and weep.’ His words point to the most profound answer to the question, ‘Where is God?’ *God is in Christ*. He was on the cross bearing our sins in his body. Now the crucified is among his people. Not only has he suffered *for* you, but he now suffers *with* you. In the Old Testament, the tabernacle (and later the temple) was the place where people went to meet with God. This was God’s home as we see in our Old Testament passage for today (Ezekiel 43:5).

Never Lose Your Wonder

 NEVER LOSE YOUR WONDER

I was reading research by Mark Batterson yesterday. No one summarizes and simplifies the wonder of the Creator and Creation like him. Consider these ten facts:

1.     No one has the same fingerprint, voiceprint, eyeprint or even sweatprint. There will never be anyone like you.

2.     You are on a giant merry-go-round called Earth that is spinning on its axis at 1000 mph and speeding through space at 67,000 mph. You traveled 1.6 million miles through space today and the Milky Way is spinning at 468,000 mph. I will bet you do not even feel dizzy.

3.     330 billion cells in your body will recycle today.

4.     There are thirty-seven sextillion biochemical reactions happening in your body every single second.

5.     If your double-helix DNA were stretched end to end, it would reach the moon and back nearly 150,000 times.

6.     With every heartbeat, six quarts of blood FedEx that oxygen through sixty thousand miles of veins, arteries, and capillaries. The average heart will pull this off more than two billion times without skipping a beat.

7.     The sun is 333,000 times the mass of the Earth but compared to most stars it is a yellow dwarf. Astronomers now estimate the existence of more than two trillion galaxies. Those galaxies have an average of one hundred billion stars. That is a lot of stars to wish upon!

8.     Every second the sun turns four million tons of matter into the equivalent of a trillion megaton bombs every second of every minute and every hour of every day.

9.     If the Earth were a little further from or a little closer to the sun, we would freeze or fry.

10. If you could catch a flight to the sun—five hundred mph, twenty-four hours per day, 365 days per year—it would take more than two decades to get there.

Let these truths sink in. Enter that sense of amazement and wonder. Be careful not to marvel at the mechanical and not the Magnificent One. Do not put God into a little box or downsize Him. Oh, for a high view of God!! God is BIG and PERSONAL.

I remember being on a beach once. Bored. That morning, I had read these words from Psalm 139:17-18, “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You.”

On the beach, I decided to conduct an experiment. I took one handful of sand and counted the grains. After 30 minutes, I quit. It was impossible. There were too many. All I could do was bask in the truth that God has more thoughts toward me than the sand grains on the seashore. I have never forgotten that revelation and how it made me feel.

God is BIG and PERSONAL. Don’t believe me? Count the grains of sand in one handful and read a science book.

Our culture is driven by marketing strategies the create fear for tomorrow. Scarcity, comparison, and volatility motivate many decisions. But I wonder how many of my choice scare driven by an assurance that all w isl be well. We live in the world but we are not of the world. Small words make all the difference in our perspective. We live in tension of the here and. Is and the not yet.

All things as they move toward God are beautiful, and they are ugly as they move away from Him.” - A.W. Tozer, The Attributes of God

Thanks 3

I’ve been short sighted far more times than I want to admit. I’ve been blind and deaf to what God has already provided and is providing. God has more going on than we can imagine, working details out in unseen ways. The Old Testament demonstrates His intervention into history and into individuals whether they realized what He was doing or not. He is doing a thousand or more things at the same time, out if our visual or auditory sphere. He doing the same today - He hasn’t changed.

“You can see God from anywhere if your mind is set to love and obey Him.” - A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God

Bible 328

I would much rather have Jesus as the cornerstone of my life than a stumbling block. When I think of something that can make me fall down, I’m not paying attention to the path, grumbling in negativity about life. In comparison to Peter’s description, I’ve minimized the importance of the cornerstone. Driving through the Rocky Mountains, I suppose a person could ignore the beauty and just keep driving on. Instead of appreciating the cornerstone, I could lay the rest of the foundation to my life in a haphazard way.

As Nicky emphasized, followers of Christ have a bond that is unshakable. United together, worship happens and the world is changed for the good.

Bible 327

How are you growing in your faith and maturity?  For me, just when I think I’ve got an issue mastered, I’m having to relearn that I must trust my Father in ways I haven’t. The illustration of our faith in God as a maturing child helps me to trust Him more. The minute I think I’ve hit a corner on the wisdom market, that I’ve grown smarter than the other guy, I’d better watch out!  I sometimes imagine myself as a small child sitting on my Father’s lap, or walking beside Him on a long walk, asking Him questions, trying to understand what He is saying. As I imagine the Father / child relationship, my perspective on most issues changes and I sense His presence.

How often have you felt like giving up?  Or have you felt a long stretch of time in despair?  I have experienced times when I thought I was spinning my wheels. My efforts were having little effect on anyone. But Philippians 1:6 is a powerful promise and hope. God is in pursuit of us and Be wants us to seek His leading, regardless of the situation. I’m learning that I increase my frustration by thinking I need to do more ‘for’ Hod. I’m learning to have my eyes and ears open to live a life ‘with’ God.

“Refuse to be average. Let your heart soar as high as it will. ” - A.W. Tozer. By seeking average, we lower the average.

What are habits of thankfulness?  Is it possible to be disciplined each day with a grateful perspective?  The everyday battle to be grateful is in my mind. The more I consume divisive news and ponder which side I’m on, I get angry and disappointed. The more I dwell on God’s kingdom in the here and now moments of my life, I am more joyful. ‘May Your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.’  ‘May Your kingdom come into my life be as it is in heaven.’  I’m re-learning to look for how He is present in my life, leading me into right thinking and living.

“O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need for further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, so that I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, ‘Rise up my love, my fair one, and come away.’ Then give me grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long.” - A.W. Tozer

I’ve spent far too much time feeling guilty that I don’t measure up to what a Christian should be like. My ‘should woulda coulda’ list is long. I have compared myself to others thinking I could never live up to their expectations or my own.  “I should be doing more and I need to get my act together.’”  But I’m constantly relearning that it’s not what I do ‘for God’ but what I do ‘with’ Him. Dallas Willard has so much to say about these two small words. A life with God is our sanctification. It’s who we are becoming. The doing will take care of itself.

"Spiritual formation is an ongoing healing of our picture of God." - Trevor Hudson

Bible 326

“Prayer that expects little will have few results.”  I read that quote this week and it stuck. I often minimize my praying, and in the process, I’m down playing everything I believe about Hod’s love and His care. I often wrestle with the debate - doesn’t God have His plan set in place?  My praying won’t change much if anything. I’m re learning that my attitude is not what Scripture is teaching. Being fatalistic is not believing in an all loving God. I should read James everyday to get my head in the game. His words keep our eyes and ears open to what cannot be seen by those without any faith at all.

God’s provision is abundant. I’ve questioned that statement many times over. A lot of decisions have been made on the fear of what could happen tomorrow. Our culture implants a a frozen fear that tomorrow will be scary with scarce provisions. Yet those in poverty in our culture have more abundance than most in the world. But I wonder how God defines His provision. By choosing Him and following His lead, we are asking our little world to be as it is in heaven. May our hearts align with His desire to provide what we need.

“In the noise of life, it’s easy to miss God’s voice. Take a moment to pause, look around, and listen. He may be guiding you in ways you haven’t yet noticed. Be open, be still—God is always speaking. Are you listening?” - Tim Tebow

Bible 325

The enemy within us is scary. If pushed into a corner, I’m not sure what I would do. Would I try to run or would I stop with a mere defensive fight?  James’s words echo Proverbs, but in a realistic brutal format about who we really are. I can either pursue wisdom or foolish living. Wise livening is an everyday choice of walking the talk. One key word that jumps out at me is humility. The more self suficicent and independent I am, the less humility I have, getting me into trouble. The more I dells upon Him, the more I choose wisely.

How have you found your emotional ups and downs stabilized as you have grown closer to Christ?  Redemption and renewal in Christ is a transformation of our whole being, including our emotional response to life events. It seems to be a life long process, discovering a perseverance that was not present before. Peace, joy, generosity, kindness and many other responses become natural. Our burdens and sorrow increase as well as we become sensitive to the stories of others, yet realizing that our Savior is with us each step of the way.

“To lose charity, tenderheartedness, sympathy, and generosity is always to simultaneously pervert the redemptive nature of biblical revelation. Narrowed “truth” may bristle enough to defend one city wall, but it is not good enough to conquer the world.” - David Powlison

Bible 324

Our words can build and develop our connections or they can disappoint and divide us. I try to forget the rude things that are said but savor the life giving encouraging words. It’s difficult to get rid of jealousy, envy, and competition among friends. Looking back, I can see how I’ve compared myself to others far too much and have felt put down by those who had more or who thought they were in a race for power and possessions. Peace and contentment in the heart do not result from envy. The more I grasp how much God lives is and what He has done for us, being jealous is very silly and petty. God’s power gives life and purpose for loving / living like none other.

Castle - Dallas Willard

I first studied Teresa of Avila’s Interior Castletwenty or so years ago, after many years of efforts to understand, live, and communicate what the spiritual life portrayed in the Bible was meant to be. I had found many helpful companions on The Way, spread across time and space and denominational distinctives.” But this book and this author immediately announced themselves as a unique presence of God in my life. The book provided instruction on a living relationship with God that I had found nowhere else. I think it very likely that you will experience the same refreshing shock as I did when you read this book.

The first thing that Teresa helped me with was appreciation of the dignity and value — indeed, the vast reality — of the human soul. Emphasis upon the wickedness and neediness of the human being tends to submerge our awareness of our greatness and our worth to God. That emphasis in turn inclines us toward thinking of ourselves as nothing, and to mistake our lostness and vileness for nothingness, a mere vacuum, rather than seeing it as the desolation of a splendid ruin

Teresa urges us to start on the path to transformation by considering our soul to be like a castle made entirely out of a diamond or of very clear crystal, in which there are many rooms.” We are meant to occupy every room or dwelling place” with God, and thereby to become the radiant beings which he intends. Teresa makes clear what lies half-concealed upon the pages of the Bible and in the lives of the great ones” for Christ — that I am an unceasing spiritual being, with an eternal destiny in God’s great universe. We may be far from God’s will, but we must know that it is possible in this exile for so great a God to commune with such foul-smelling worms; and, on seeing this, come to love a goodness so perfect and a mercy so immeasurable.”

The rooms” in the interior castle are ways of living in relation to the God who made us and seeks us. Teresa’s superiors had ordered her to write on prayer. And so she does, but prayer understood precisely as a way of living, not as an occasional exercise. This book, and others such as The Way of the Pilgrim, helped me to understand what it is to live a life of prayer. I learned from it what it means to live in communication with God to him, not just speaking, but listening and acting. Most of what I know about the phenomenology of God speaking to us, I learned from studying and putting into practice what Teresa says in the Sixth Dwelling Places, Chapter Three. It is still, I think, the best treatment ever written of what it is like for God to speak to his children.

Another thing I came to see more clearly from studying this book was why things go as they do in the lives of professing Christians. There is still today not much good information on this. But if you will look at ordinary church life” with Dwelling Places One through Four in hand, you will be able to understand a huge amount of what is really going on, and of what to expect, for good and for ill; and you will be able to give good counsel and direction to yourself and others as you go through the process of life together. You will realize that Teresa is an absolute master of the spiritual life and possesses an amazing depth and richness of spiritual theology. Yet there is no stuffiness or mere head knowledge” in her at all. She has remarkable freedom to be experimental, and to say now I can’t really explain this to you,” and to go ahead and say astonishingly illuminating things anyway. You can put what she says to the test.

Back of all this instruction is the fact, which was very important for my particular background, that there is a reliable order and sequence to growth in the spiritual life. This is built into her model of the castle” of the soul. Now,” she in effect says, this is the layout, this is what is to be gone through, here is where you start, here are some things to do, and here is what you may expect to happen and what it means.” And she conveys all this wisdom with an appealing humble, experimental tone.

Finally, Dwelling Places Five through Seven proved to be, for me, the finest treatments of union with Christ and with God that I have found in spiritual literature. There are other helpful things, in this connection, such as James Stewart’s A Man in Christ, but for the phenomenology, the descriptive analysis of the details of what it is really like, nothing has ever surpassed Teresa’s Castle. Union with Christ — in regeneration, justification, sanctification, and glorification — is of all themes the one in most need of recovery today. And Teresa’s entire treatment of redemption in the spiritual life with Christ is unsurpassed and unlikely to be surpassed in the future.

One of the unfortunate things that has happened to the latter stages of the Interior Castle, and even to the book as a whole, is that people have tried to read it as if it were an interfaith,” not a distinctively Christian, portrayal of mystic union.” To do this is to miss its substance, deprive it of its context, and make it unprofitable for those whose faith is in Christ and his Father. Of course anyone is free to take what they can from it, but to dismiss its particularity will leave little to genuinely assist the reader to walk with God.

A word about how to read this book. It is not a model of easy reading, judged by today’s standards, and must be approached as if you were mining for treasure — which you are. First, read it nonstop — just push ahead — to get a view of the whole. Mark themes and divisions clearly as you go, and at the end sketch out the outline. This is crucial for understanding Teresa’s project as a teacher. Then go back and read slowly from beginning to end. This time you mark striking passages for further study. Then meditatively dwell on those passages, not necessarily from beginning to end, but in the order your heart and mind call you to. Call upon His Majesty” to assist you as he assisted Teresa. And the diamond castle which is your soul will increasingly glow with the divine presence.

I wonder what God thinks of my planning skills. Does He view them as haughty and audacious?  Does He think my goals have been set too low?  We do our best with what we know at the time of our decisions, but I often question whether I have spent enough time praying, reflecting, weighing the consequences of options. I also wonder whether my analyzing is a fear and I don’t take enough risks. I can he on and on but the main take away for me is to trust Him, honor Him, in everything I do. If I’m committed to His glory, He will change my thinking and direction.

“It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until he has hurt him deeply." God actually rises up storms of conflict in relationships at times in order to accomplish that deeper work in our character. We cannot love our enemies in our own strength. This is graduate-level grace. Are you willing to enter this school? Are you willing to take the test? If you pass, you can expect to be elevated to a new level in the Kingdom. For He brings us through these tests as preparation for greater use in the Kingdom. You must pass the test first.” - A.W. Tozer

It is possible to accumulate knowledge and information without making any change in the heart. I can certainly be driven to be a an expert (in my opinion) on a topic and be judgmental about related topics. But who cares if I don’t treat others with respect. I’m constantly learning how my thoughts are not consistent with my actions. There is a gap between the head and heart. I want to be congruent and consistent, not a hypocrite. May God empower our hearts to follow Him.

How is it possible to have access to so much information and research, yet miss the wisdom of the ages?  How could a person sit under a lifetime of good Biblical teaching yet be victimized by negativity and cynicism? The road is wide toward destruction but the way is narrow to fin life. Few are those who find it.

Matthew 7:14 - For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

This verse is shocking and sobering as we have so much anger and division in our culture. Reading  listening, reflecting and praying hopefully will connect our head storehouse of information to transform our hearts and lives for kingdom living.

“Millions call themselves by His name, it is true, and pay some token homage to Him, but a simple test will show how little He is really honored among them. Let the average man be put to the proof on the question of who or what is ABOVE, and his true position will be exposed. Let him be forced into making a choice between God and money, between God and men, between God and personal ambition, God and self, God and human love, and God will take second place every time. Those other things will be exalted above. However the man may protest, the proof is in the choice he makes day after day throughout his life.” - A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God

Bible 322

I’m taking notes for myself as I think about Nicky’s summary of these passages: The T’s that describe our journey:

Trust our Triune God in all things

Trials - every storm is a classroom. Every trial is a test. Every experience is an education. Every difficulty is for your development.

Temptation - ‘Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation leans on the doorbell.’

The tounge transformed. Learning to listen  instead of talking is a mark of wisdom.

Turning and adjusting my path as I learn to trust Him more. Faith is not a once and done decision but a life long process of decision making based on trust.

Bible 321

I’ve had students say that their biggest fear in life is loneliness. The statistics about this issue prove that to be true in nearly every age group. Being intentional about building a community of support and encouragement is not easy in a culture that seems connected by social media, yet is divided on many issues. Building a group of like minded friends, regardless of background, color or age is a worthwhile pursuit, maybe more important than many other goals. You are definitely one huge encouragement to me, Blake. As we look to our Lord for strength and stability, I so appreciate your love and faithfulness.

Bible 320

I used to think worship was on Sunday. But reading the New Testament has privet that theory wrong. The promise that God will never leave us or forsake us, no matter the circumstances, brings a quiet peace and calmness, one side of looking at true worship. God’s character never changes and He is loving and full of mercy. He is not distant and waiting for my next good up to tell me ‘I told you so!’  God’s character is purity, holiness, and love. He is full of joy at seeing His creation. He is full of power, yet full of humility by sending Jesus to die on our behalf.  Our worship is deep and over whelming.

Full Time - Michael Sprague

 Energizing

There’s a buzz that comes with living inside the will of God. It’s the helper’s high. It’s joy in serving Jesus. It’s energizing even if you get tired. In John 4, Jesus took His initial team on a little cross-cultural training trip to Samaria. At Jacob’s well, the boys encounter a Samaritan woman. One good look at her and they think, “Her, a divine appointment? You have to be kidding.” Why mess with the mission field on a mission trip, right? Besides, their stomachs are growling and it’s lunchtime.

The disciples go into town while Jesus has a spiritual feast with this lowly, empty lady whose soul longs for living water. Eventually the disciples return totally oblivious to the movement of God that is afoot, a harvest being picked. In the meantime, the disciples say, “‘Rabbi, eat.’ But He said to them, ‘I have food to eat that you do not know about.’ The disciples therefore were saying to one another, ‘No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?’” (John 4:31-34) Can’t you hear Jesus sighing right here? I’m guessing it’s Peter doing the talking. They don’t get it. Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work” (John 4:31-34).

Jesus was making a profound statement that went right over the disciples’ heads, and maybe yours and mine also. You could substitute the word “energy” for food. The right food gives energy. The right food is entering into the will of God. Jesus just had a 7-course meal.

What is your food? What makes you feel most alive? What gives you the highest buzz? Jesus says there is nothing like entering the redemptive drama, living the spiritual adventure through obeying God. It is the ride of a lifetime. It’s pure energy.”

Periodically, when speaking to a group, I’ll try to gauge whether they personally own these truths with a diagnostic question. “How many of you are in full-time service for Jesus Christ?” I ask. People look at me and the wheels start to turn mentally. The pastor and missionary types in the room immediately put up their hands, then a few committed laypeople. Many look confused about whether to raise their hands. Then I clarify: “I didn’t say how many of you are in full-time vocational Christian ministry, but how many of you are full-time for Jesus Christ?” People smile. The light comes on. Many more put their hands in the air.

I want to blow up the myth that only a few pastor types are full time for Jesus Christ. The day you trusted Christ, you got a full-time ministry contract for Jesus. You are “a plain clothes agent in the Jesus Revolution – the only revolution that will ultimately be successful.” Royal blood flows through your veins, and you have an inheritance that makes Bill Gates’ money look like petty cash. You are a kingdom player, pulsating with the life of the Spirit. Fasten your seatbelts and live.

Trust 2

The word obedience is not used in our culture. I’ve often substituted other words when discussing this topic, such as surrender or submission. These words are counter cultural when we think of ‘my rights’ and ‘don’t tread on me’. We have so many stories of people being victimized by cruel and manipulative authority figures, that we become hyper vigilant about being gullible. But obeying our Triune Bod who is all living and pure in everything He does is a different matter. I need constant reminding that He is good in an age of negativity and cynicism.

“The heart of the world is breaking under this load of pride and pretense. There is no release from our burden apart from the meekness of Christ. - A.W. Tozer

Trust 1

What would happen to our lives if we could trust no one or anything in our culture?  The economic collapse in 1929 and the animosity since the pandemic give us a glimpse. Disappointment, despair, and division are on the rise, each tools of the evil one that undermine all good efforts. But our attachment to the reality of His kingdom provides a trust that will not fail. The abundant life in Christ provides joy, peace and a calmness transcends current trends and anxiety

“True faith rests upon the character of God and asks no further proof than the moral perfections of the One who cannot lie. - A.W. Tozer

Bible 319

It is easy to imagine life as a walk without a road map. There is no way to be prepared for what challenges we find along the way. I’ve had students say “I’m big a planner. I’ll just find out what happens in my life as it happens!”  There is some truth to that but the letter to the Hebrews indicates a far different approach. When you and I ran our race together in Broken Bow, I was half way prepared, not as much as you. Training ourselves for the challenges ahead takes a disciplined approach. Developing the mindset that there is more to life than a consumer driven life is so important. Living people and influencing others for the good is a legacy I want, far more than accumulating stuff.

Knowing 7

How can you and I be the light in someone’s life, showing them how much our Triune God loves them?  Is there a correct strategy?  I’m learning that God is far more in pursuit of each person than I am. It is not up to me to fix what is broken in another person. But I can be apart of the process by listening and being available. I cannot be the light if I’m not in Gene light. I cannot care in in ways that will be receptive I’m not sensitive to the Spirit’s leading. I cannot be perceived as caring if I’m not experiencing the Father’s love myself.

“We can be in our day what the heroes of faith were in their day - but remember at the time they didn't know they were heroes.” - A.W. Tozer

Knowing 6

How can you and I live a  Christ like life in a world of full of division and anger?  Perhaps the opportunities to shine His light have never been better as the darkness of the world closes in. We cannot do it in our own efforts. It is shining His light as we are standing in the light, not in the shadows of cynicism and disappointment. As we experience the deep abiding love of our Savior, God shows us the next step.

“Jesus is with you in

the darkness.

Jesus is with you in

confusion’s cloud.

Jesus is with you when

doubt’s burden is heavy.

Jesus is with you in

guilt’s shame.

Jesus is with you when

strength fades.

Jesus is with you in

the soul’s winter.

Jesus is with you.

Jesus is with you.

This is the promise of

grace.”

- Paul Tripp

Bible 318

Without faith it’s impossible to….the list is long. There would be more broken relationships; greater despair; and economic chaos. Faith is a glue that holds society together. I like Nicky’s acronyms:

Faith as a *choice*:

Forsaking All I Take Him (FAITH)

Faith as *perseverance*:

Feeling Afraid I Trust Him (FAITH)

God has promised to NEVER leave us or forsake us  His character quality is faithfulness - a belief to live lives upon. Faith is expecting God to be with us and for us, to bring us closer to Himself.

Knowing 5

Learning to open up and be vulnerable with caring Christ followers is often hard. It’s been ingrained in me to always act like I’ve got my act together. Being honest and vulnerable has been viewed as a weak character trait. I used to think that type of life was being a sissy, open to being victimized. But how do you reconcile the John Wayne heroic style with Jesus’s teachings?  I’m learning that Jesus was no weakling, but demonstrated strength beyond any cultural norm. He faced the worst our world could throw at him, yet overcame death, defying all worldly powers. To connect with like minded brothers, walking arm in arm, as we follow Jesus, empowers us to mature beyond what we thought could happen.

“An infinite God can give all of Himself to each of His children. He does not distribute Himself that each may have a part, but to each one He gives all of Himself as fully as if there were no others.” - A.W. Tozer

Bible 317

Faith is needed to live and survive each day. How many of our decisions are based on faith, that those decisions are the best choices?  Many of our decisions impact our lifestyle and who we become. Wild living without consideration for those who live us can be devastating for everyone. But consistent practice if the character qualities we want, based on faith, brings great results for those we love and care for. Abraham practiced faith and trust, yet was impatient. His lack of of faith had a ripple effect t on generations, but his faithful trust in Hod despite his flaws, also had a ripple effect. May you and I live our lives practicing a humble dependence on our loving Father. As we grow in our intimacy with Him, He will show us the benefits of a life well lived.

Bible 316

We have been fortunate to live in a culture that has not openly persecuted the Christian faith. We can be left out of certain activities and not be included at times. Perhaps it’s easier to blend in without sticking out, resulting in a watered down faith. The author of Hebrews goes to great length with being all in for Christ. Like Pippa said “ In Hebrews 10:23 it says, ‘Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.’

I have verses 22 and 23 highlighted in my Bible -  I’m not sure when I did it, but our faith is the only hope we have. It cannot compared or measured to anything other standard of motivation.

Knowing 4

I used to think it was weird to have a close personal relationship with an all knowing Creator of the universe. Such a concept has no earthly comparison and it defies logic. Yet the reality of His presence is foundational to who He is. He is full of compassion and mercy, pursuing each of us, jealous for our attention. We are in Christ and He is us and we are in Him, through the power and presence of the Spirit.

“We need never shout across the spaces to an absent God. He is nearer than our own soul, closer than our most secret thoughts” - A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God

'God's Word Is Very Alive and Well': YouVersion Bible Passes 800 Million Downloads, 2,000 Languages

LIFE.CHURCH in OKLAHOMA CITY – The YouVersion Bible app has now surpassed 800 million downloads worldwide, and it has become so prevalent that it's reshaping the future of Bible engagement.

Before becoming one of the most downloaded apps globally, helping millions access the Bible in over 2,000 languages, YouVersion founder Bobby Gruenewald says it all started as a simple website attempting to solve a big problem.

"I wish I could tell you that it just took off and it was this great success. The reality of it was, after a lot of work and after a lot of doors being opened and a lot of people collectively working on it, the website was a failure," he recalls.

Bobby was looking for an easier way to read the Bible more consistently using technology. But the solution he envisioned hadn't yet been invented.

"And so Steve Jobs, in early 2008 announced it was going to be possible to develop apps for the iPhone and create some brand new thing called an app store," he explains.

Not knowing what an app was, he recruited a 19-year-old on his team to build what the world today calls the Bible app.

The Bible app was a hit, starting out as one of 200 free apps on the Apple store. In the first week, more than 80,000 people downloaded it.

Today, the Bible app is opened more than 270 times each second. It supports 70-plus languages, with more than 2,000 Bible translations.

"Between 10 and 12 million per month," Gruenewald says. "These are new devices that are installing the Bible app."

If you've ever used YouVersion to follow a reading plan or find a daily verse, you're part of a community that's reshaping how we engage with scripture. On Easter Sunday alone, YouVersion saw a record-breaking 17 million users, with 3.5 million new installs. Gruenewald believes this surge in Bible engagement is part of a larger global trend.

"The narrative that people no longer read the Bible is simply not true. We have evidence and empirical data, real data, not just a survey that someone had somewhere, that indicates that there is momentum globally around scripture engagement," he says. "So we should be encouraged to know that God's word is very alive and well, and if anything, more relevant to today's culture than maybe ever before in human history."

YouVersion offers three products: the Bible app, the Bible app for kids, and Bible app lite, designed for regions where internet access is limited, but not in the U.S. Now, the team is in beta mode with Bible app loop, geared toward tweens. It's being tested in India.

As the app continues to grow, its future is being shaped by one of the most powerful technologies of our time—artificial intelligence.

"We're being very careful to make sure that there's good transparency, and that we are able to make sure that if it's ever answering questions, or if we ever choose to have a feature that does that, that it does it with accuracy," Gruenewald says.

Beyond impressive numbers, YouVersion's growth is driven by a deeper mission: to help people connect with God and his Word. The app generates no revenue and operates solely through donations.

"Like I mentioned, 200- and, almost, 40,000 donors last year that supported it around the tune about $60 million is kind of the scale and scope of what YouVersion is today. That's grown quite a bit in the last few years," Gruenewald says.

That surge is in part coordinated between donors and Bible translation groups, working to accelerate the pace at which every single language could have some portion of scripture translated – hopefully by 2033, the 2,000th anniversary of the death and resurrection of Jesus, we could see every language have some portion of scripture translated.

"It's imperative, we think, to be able to have God's Word in every single heart language, so that every single person has the benefit that we have of even able to hear God's voice, hear Jesus's words in their own language," Gruenewald says.

As YouVersion continues to expand, its mission remains the same: to use technology to make the Bible accessible to everyone. Gruenewald says YouVersion is working with nearly 1,000 companies to leverage AI for good – and to promote an ecosystem within the faith community around using tech to its fullest potential.

"So until we can be sure of those things, our uses of AI are going to be much more in the realm of machine learning or ways that we use it to help us make recommendations around content or connect or label content in a way that makes it more useful for us when we search and look for things," Gruenewald says.
