Some Other Way? 9/6

If we try to live by the standard of good works, how much is good enough?  Trying harder leads to guilt and shame or an attitude that I’m much better than the next guy. I’m not God or the judge, but the gift of salvation is followed by a desire to do good and be the best possible person through God’s Word and the leading of His Spirit.  Our salvation is Him working in us and our surrender to Him. The message of the gospel is simple but surrendering our lives to Him can be difficult

“I have had the privilege of preaching the gospel on every continent and in most countries of the world, and when I present the message of the simple gospel of Jesus Christ with authority, he takes the message and drives it supernaturally into human hearts.” - John R.W. Stott, Between Two Worlds

Real Messiah? 9/5

From a human point of view, these prophecies and fulfillments are absolutely astonishing. No human in their own power could live a life like Jesus and make sure each prediction came true. But to our Creator and Lord, all of history is playing out what he has intended while experiencing the consequences of our sin. He will bring absolute good out of the chaos and evil in our world. I can get absorbed with the divisive news but I should never allow what is happening around us to diminish the hope we have in Jesus

The verbs to “know” and “believe” and “be persuaded” are liberally sprinkled throughout the New Testament. Faith and confidence are regarded as norms of Christian experience, not as exceptions.
John R.W. Stott, Between Two Worlds

Keep A Good Man Down? 9/4

The empty tomb is the defining moment of history. Jesus’ resurrection changed everything about us, enabling us to live in hope, love, and faith. No matter what the background or sin that an individual has, the resurrection changes a person into a person with a future rooted in hope. No matter the pain, difficulty or suffering of this world, the resurrection overrides the issue. Our response is submission and reverence from the deepest depth of our heart. The power of the resurrection in our heart is a joy and strength that is difficult to put into words, verified by the presence of the Holy Spirit.

“Christianity is in its very essence a resurrection religion. The concept of resurrection lies at its heart. If you remove it, Christianity is destroyed.” - John Stott

Heard This Before? 9/3

As I read todays devotional, I thought of Lee Strobel’s book The Case For Christ. As an attorney and journalist, he set out to prove that the resurrection never happened. But after all his research, he concluded that Jesus did rise from the dead. Others have done the same, choosing that there is no credible evidence to dispute the New Testament and the claims of the apostles. He has risen!!

Why I am a Christian is due ultimately neither to the influence of my parents and teachers, nor to my own personal decision for Christ, but to ‘the Hound of Heaven’. That is, it is due to Jesus Christ himself, who pursued me relentlessly even when I was running away from him in order to go my own way. And if it were not for the gracious pursuit of the Hound of Heaven I would today be on the scrap-heap of wasted and discarded lives.
John R.W. Stott, Why I Am a Christian

Eyewitness Accounts? 9/2

The authenticity and accuracy of the Gospel can be seen in changed lives today, just as recorded in Scripture. Some argue that Christianity can not be trusted because of many who abuse and use their belief system for personal gain. But the truth of Jesus’ teaching overrides any who try to misuse the Bible. The changed lives of the apostles happened because they believed and the Holy Spirit was working in their hearts. The same can be said today and hopefully of us.

“The gospel is not good advice to men, but good news about Christ; not an invitation to us to do anything, but a declaration of what God has done; not a demand, but an offer.” - John Stott

Reliable? 9/1

Knowing the certainty of what is stated and promised in Scripture brings hope and deeper faith. I’m learning and relearning that knowing is far more than believing the information provided in the Bible. Knowing involves a life change which is ongoing and never finished. Knowing is experiencing God’s truth in my life experiences, learning to not fear, but trust His presence, no matter the situation. I pray the same for you, that you will experience His truth much deeper than I’ve been privileged to know and am relearning.

“The very first step to becoming a follower of Jesus Christ is the humble admission that we need him. Nothing keeps us out of the kingdom of God more surely than our pride and self-sufficiency.” - John R.W. Stott, Why I Am a Christian

Fact or Legend? 8/31

The accuracy of The Bible is spot on. I recently read an article that a temple had been uncovered in Jerusalem by archeologists that perfectly fit what is described in the Old Testament just prior to Solomon’s reign as king. The more we learn as time goes on, the more accurate we find the Bible, according to research in history and archeology. Our loyalty to it is important, but more importantly is our submission. More importantly is whether Scriptural truth has taken root in our hearts, changing who we are and what we are all about.

If you are in doubt regarding what is right and what is wrong, do not be too greatly influenced by the customs and conventions of Christians you may know. Go by the clear teaching of the Bible and by the prompting of your conscience, and Christ will gradually lead you further along the path of righteousness. When he puts his finger on anything, give it up. It may be some association or recreation, some literature we read, or some attitude of pride, jealousy or resentment, or an unforgiving spirit. Jesus told his followers to pluck out their eye and cut off their hand or foot if it caused them to sin. We are not to obey this with dead literalism, of course, and mutilate our bodies. It is a figure of speech for dealing ruthlessly with the avenues along which temptation comes to us.
John R.W. Stott, Basic Christianity

Lunatic? 8/30

The more we read the New Testament and the Old Testament prophecies, there is no other conclusion than Jesus was God and is God. To believe is more than giving a mental acknowledgement - it’s a life changing pursuit of knowing Him more and more. Living life on purpose for Him and guided by Him brings fulfillment and joy, even through the rough times.

“We have to make a personal response to Jesus Christ, committing ourselves unreservedly to him as our Savior and Lord … At its simplest Christ’s call was “Follow me.” He asked men and women for their personal allegiance. He invited them to learn from him, to obey his words and to identify themselves with his cause … Now there can be no following without a previous forsaking.” -  John Stott, Basic Christianity

Liar 8/29

This devotional reminds me of a book I recently read - Another Gospel. The author points out the importance of Christ being the central point of everything. If a teaching does not have Christ as the focus, the teaching is leading us away from Him. This is true in my own life as well - if I’m focusing on myself, for my own promotion, or if I think I’m not getting my fair share on whatever the issue, then I’m probably not focusing on Christ.

“To follow Christ is to renounce all lesser loyalties … let me be more explicit about the forsaking which cannot be separated from the following of Jesus Christ!” -  John Stott, The Cross of Christ

Different? 8/28

Only Jesus is incomparable and beyond any other person who has ever lived. No one else performed miracles, claimed to be God, and was the Creator. Minimizing His pre-eminence is shameful to say the least. May you and I live up to His life and resurrection, that we will have no regret looking back, looking forward with no reservations.

“Octavius Winslow summed it up in a neat statement: ‘Who delivered up Jesus to die? Not Judas, for money; not Pilate, for fear; not the Jews, for envy; – but the Father, for love!’” -  John Stott, The Cross of Christ

A Curse? 8/27

Watching the news reports of the Russian atrocities in Ukraine is a reminder that God sees every detail on the globe, whether Putin believes in a God or not. It’s obvious Putin does not think he will be held accountable for his decisions. The same is true with us. I want to finish faithful to the end as we have an appointed time when we will give an ccount for our lives.

2 Chronicles 16:9

[9] For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him…..”

Many people visualize a God who sits comfortably on a distant throne, remote, aloof, uninterested, and indifferent to the needs of mortals, until, it may be, they can badger him into taking action on their behalf. Such a view is wholly false. The Bible reveals a God who, long before it even occurs to man to turn to him, while man is still lost in darkness and sunk in sin, takes the initiative, rises from his throne, lays aside his glory, and stoops to seek until he finds him.

Is atheism moral 8/26

The universe has no understanding without a moral order and a perfect standard to guide it. To me atheism is chaos and anarchy. Anyone can do or say anything they want without consequence without a moral order set up by the Creator.  As our culture becomes distant to the truth of a Creator who will hold every person accountable, people will do what is right in their own eyes, not what God desires for us. As our culture departs from the moral order of civility, more division and anger can happen at the spur of the moment because we have no conscience.

“The Christian message has a moral challenge. If the message is true, the moral challenge has to be accepted. So God is not a fit object for man’s detached scrutiny. You cannot fix God at the end of a telescope or a microscope and say “How interesting!” God is not interesting. He is deeply upsetting. The same is true of Jesus Christ … We know that to find God and to accept Jesus Christ would be a very inconvenient experience. It would involve the rethinking of our whole outlook on life and the readjustment of our whole manner of life. And it is a combination of intellectual and moral cowardice which makes us hesitate. We do not find because we do not seek. We do not seek because we do not want to find, and we know that the way to be certain of not finding is not to seek … Christ’s promise is plain: "Seek and you will find.” - John R.W. Stott, Basic Christianity

Is Atheism Scientific 8/25

I’m relearning the fact that life is very fragile and sometimes beyond understanding to the best of doctors. One cardiologist told us that each person’s heart is unique to the person and no doctor knows everything that can be done to solve complicated issues to that person’s unique heart. A doctor cannot determine what is exactly wrong with that person’s heart until he/she goes inside the heart to see what is happening. Even then, there is so much to learn. How true this is for our heart of hearts. Only God knows what is going on with our soul. He is wanting each person to surrender to Him, the Great Physician. Today’s devotional emphasizes God’s creation is exactly that - His unique design to be fully appreciated by us, the created.

Our love grows soft if it is not strengthened by truth, and our truth grows hard if it is not softened by love.
John Stott

What’s the Point 8/24

If you are like me, I can have doubts creep in to my thinking. In the past I have doubted my salvation, doubted God’s loving presence, and doubted that I’d ever grow deeper in my love for Christ. But thankfully, evidence continues to build proving the accuracy of scripture and the validity of the Bible’s claims. The evidence continues to build internally that Jesus is alive and His Spirit is present. The evidence that He lives in others is reassuring that He is present and working among us.

We must allow the Word of God to confront us, to disturb our security, to undermine our complacency and to overthrow our patterns of thought and behavior.

Misfit Thoughts

Our culture has a growing discontent with how our institutions have always operates. News reporting has grown into a for profit business, slanting reports with opinions in order to gain financially. Ordinary citizens only seek information to confirm previously held bias and opinion. Politicians who bully and pressure the electrode to a viewpoint enhance intolerance, preventing compromise toward common goals.

"Let's not get discouraged for the way things are. Let's keep believing and fighting for the way things should be." - Jon Gordon

Many who profess to be Christian live in fear of those with opposing views and retreat into clusters, hoping to gain power and dominate the pluralistic culture. The role model of Old Testament heroes is the antithesis of dominating with one view. Joseph and Daniel worked in cultures that had very different values than them. Nehemiah gained the confidence of a foreign king to do what God wanted. Esther worked undercover to save her people. In the New Testament, Lydia developed her business  among nonbelievers yet helped spread the gospel.

Having invested 46 years into public education and having taken all undergraduate and graduate classes at public universities, I’m dismayed at the lack of respect by many church people toward public employees. Most public school educators work hard to prepared their students for a real work world. Some even pray for their students but most work hard to protect them from a variety of cultural evils.

When I hear a speaker in a church setting decry the evil of daycare facilities and public schools, I’m dismayed. When I listen to similar speakers defy health warnings, thumbing their nose at wearing madks or receiving a vaccine, I feel as if I’m in a minority. These same speakers think there is nothing wrong with consuming alcohol, claiming that to voice opposition to social drinking is legalism. Legalism depends on who’s rules we follow.

Some Christian professing speakers feel the need to use vulgar language or phrases that are not acceptable in the public school classroom. I wonder if they are saying things for the shock value, or merely to rationalize how far they have strayed from a humble obedient response to the Holy Spirit.

What is going to happen if the Christ follower withdraws from all public social settings?  What if the only source of information becomes the resource to deepen the withdrawal?

Nehemiah constantly faced slanderous accusations during his ministry.  His reply?  “There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are inventing them in your own mind” (Neh. 6:8).

Don’t allow baseless bullies to steal your focus from what God has called you to do.

Making History Count 8/23

Two words come to mind after reading today’s devotional - lived and forgiven. I’ve spent quite a bit of my life beating myself up that I’d never measure up or be what God wanted. Other times I’d gloat that I wasn’t like the worst sinners and managed to stay out of big trouble, only to crash again, beating myself up. Certainly that is no way to live until coming to grips that I’m loved beyond understanding and I’m forgiven. He has paid all penalties and removed the condemnation or gloating. He is the one to be honored, not me.

The message of Jesus very different from every other voice ever heard. He never lowered his standards or modified his conditions to make his call more readily acceptable. He asked his first disciples, and he has asked every disciple since, to give him their thoughtful and total commitment. Nothing less than this will do
John R.W. Stott, Basic Christianity

Reflecting Back on the Past 8/22

Looking back, I can see that there have been historic events in my life that have helped change my path. But there have been decisions and events that have begun a slow process of change, building upon the change that was initiated. Choosing to follow Christ, or responding to His leading in my heart, however you look at it, began a life long path that has been growing. I wonder how unaware I’ve been to the importance of some events, to what God was doing in the undercurrent.  Becoming a Christ follower takes a lifetime to work itself out - it’s not a one time decision. Even though He has redeemed me from a life of rebellion, He is restoring and rebuilding what I could never do on my own effort  I’m amazed at what has happened in my life when I’ve been so blind to His working.  I’m so grateful to how He has protected me from my own stupidity and foolishness.  I’m overwhelmed for the love He has shown me through my family, friends and former students

“The Christian landscape is strewn with the wreckage of derelict, half built towers—the ruins of those who began to build and were unable to finish. For thousands of people still ignore Christ’s warning and undertake to follow him without first pausing to reflect on the cost of doing so. The result is the great scandal of Christendom today, so called “nominal Christianity.” - John Stott

Imitate the Father 8/21

I’m praying that you and I become imitators of Christ, demonstrating His love and character like never before. May we increase in wisdom with applying God’s Word in practical ways. Our world needs so much direction, encouragement and focus  we can become distracted by a variety of rabbit trails, leading to trouble, anger, and argument. Imitating Christ brings peace, hope, faith, and love

“Many people visualize a God who sits comfortably on a distant throne, remote, aloof, uninterested, and indifferent to the needs of mortals, until, it may be, they can badger him into taking action on their behalf. Such a view is wholly false. The Bible reveals a God who, long before it even occurs to man to turn to him, while man is still lost in darkness and sunk in sin, takes the initiative, rises from his throne, lays aside his glory, and stoops to seek until he finds him.” - John R.W. Stott, Basic Christianity

Colossians 3:16

[16] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Learn to Love 8/20

1 Corinthians cuts deep into a person’s heart and daily thinking to almost any decision. Am I self serving, wanting something in return?  Am I self promoting, wanting to be known as a good person?  Am I thinking that I’m better than the next person, because of all the good that I’m doing, or because I do not have ill intent toward others?  I’m additional, our culture seems to be sliding to greater division and anger. 1 Corinthians 13 is considered a weak and ineffective method to address many social problems. But God’s method is viewed as foolish by the world’s standards. God’s upside down approach emphasizes that love is self sacrificing with no strings attached. Being unconditional and fair are symptoms of a changed life because of the Spirit’s residence.

“God intends us to penetrate the world. Christian salt has no business to remain snugly in elegant little ecclesiastical salt cellars; our place is to be rubbed into the secular community, as salt is rubbed into meat, to stop it going bad. And when society does go bad, we Christians tend to throw up our hands in pious horror and reproach the non-Christian world; but should we not rather reproach ourselves? One can hardly blame unsalted meat for going bad. It cannot do anything else. The real question to ask is: Where is the salt?” — John R.W. Stott

Produce Fruit 8/19

There are a lot of reasons I haven’t cooperated with the Holy Spirit in the past, even though I knew God was present in my life. One big reason was not paying attention to Scripture, thinking I was too busy or occupied with other responsibilities. But even now, God is showing me that I need to pray the Scriptures, not just study a passage. Being aware and awake to what the Spirit is doing is key for cooperation, instead of living in my own little bubble

Lord, Thank you so

Much that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time.  Thank you for the assurance we have that your sacrifice on the cross was a one time painful traumatic crisis, providing the needed exchange and payment for my sins. Amen

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭10:10‬ ‭CSB‬‬

“We should not ask, ‘What is wrong with the world?’  For that diagnosis has already been given. Rather we should ask, ‘What has happened to the salt and light?.’” — John R.W. Stott

Experience Joy 8/18

Full joy is hard to put into words because there is no comparison and it not based on circumstances. This joy is present during the best of times and worst of times. Even when life is uncertain and difficult to handle, the joy of knowing Christ is present, giving reassurance that God will provide the grace to handle our situation at just the right moment. Even when everyone around us seems to join the angry divisional chatter about our culture, we can bring a refocus on the joy, hope, and love found in Christ

The major mark of justified believers is joy, especially joy in God himself. We should be the most positive people in the world. For the new community of Jesus Christ is characterized not by a self-centered triumphalism but by a God-centered worship.

Discern 8/17

His presence in our hearts provides great joy that no circumstance can replace or destroy. Happiness, in my thinking, is circumstantial and can disappear depending on what is happening in the moment. But true joy is deeper than what is happening because Jesus sympathizes with our circumstances and has died for our sins. Our loyalty and fidelity to Him is far deeper and steadfast than any situation we encounter

God’s great aim has always been, and will forever be, relationship with us. Sometimes, He may deprive us of something in order to draw us to Someone. And when we reciprocate—when we decide that we want Him more than we want His stuff—the most amazing thing happens. We are rewired and our requests are either altered as we grow to know and to prefer what He wants for us, or they are simply answered because, in seeking first the kingdom of God, “all these things” are given to us as well (Matt 6:33).

Renew the Mind 8/16

Pursuing the mind of Christ, capturing every thought to be put before Him, is so important if we want to grow deeper with Christ. Our world is filled with many varying systems of thought that can distract us away from Christ. Some of these ‘systems’ seem to focus on parts of the Bible, seemingly good ideas. But without the mind of Christ as central to the teaching, we can be led astray. I pray that you and I always be focused on Him.

So I'm waiting for God, and God is waiting for me to see if I am really waiting for him, and not just wanting things from him.
Pete Greig

Walking in the Word 8/15

I’ve experienced ‘dabbling’ in God’s Word, with the idea of knowing just enough to get by in my Christian life. I used to think that my private life as a Christian could be separate from my public life. But the idolatry of our cultural distractions show how fake my half hearted devotion to Christ really was. I used to think powers, possessions and prestige were the American dream but I’ve realized that these will be worthless from an eternal perspective. I want to be all in for Him because He is in me. His sacrifice paid for my sin and I want His kingdom to come fully into my heart, glorifying Him as my true King.

But I am learning to understand that I may never fully understand. I am learning to be a bit more okay with not being okay. Life sometimes hurts, but I’ve discovered that deleting God from the equation doesn’t actually help. It merely removes all meaning and morality from the mess and all real hope from the future. And so I’m sort of stuck with God, even when I don’t understand him. Even when I don’t completely like him. Turns out he is all I’ve got. And maybe this is where hallowing actually begins.
Pete Greig, How to Pray

Experiencing God’s Best 8/14

Obedience has a negative tone in our culture because it is associated with being forced to do something, destroying our independence. I’m sure there would be a huge disagreement about what obedience to God means in our culture. But from Scripture, the view changes to a choice, or a decision to follow Christ out of love for Him. Being compelled to obey is a freedom of living like no other philosophy or belief system. Obeying Him is life changing, leading us to an inner character change and the fruits of living by the Spirit.

Philippians 2:12-13

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,  for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
